DESCRIPTION: Come with us as we take in the beauty of the great American Southwest. This 14 day adventure takes us across the country where we explore everything from the varied scenery of Colorado to breathtaking vistas throughout Utah and Arizona.
Our trip out west stops at the famed Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston, MO followed the next day by a visit to the 'old west' in Dodge City, KS where we visit the Boot Hill Museum and enjoy a dinner and show to end day two.
We roll into Colorado and the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve on day three and into over 30 square miles of dunes, including the largest sand dunes in the country. Day 4 we visit the Underground Mining Museum (located underground of course) and enjoy a evening of music and laughter at a dinner and show at the Bar D Chuckwagon in Durango, CO.
Day 5 we board the train pulled by an actual steam locomotive at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Enjoy absolutely stunning views as we make our way to Silverton, elevation 9,302 feet. Day 6 we look out over sheer-walled canyons in Colorado National Monument, followed by a visit to Dead Horse Point State Park; a hidden gem with a famous view of the Colorado River. Next, we tour the magnificent landscapes of Arches National Park.
The next two days bring us into the heart of some of Utah's spectacular landscapes. Beginning in Capital Reef National Park and continuing to Bryce Canyon National Park, day 7 is packed with views that are hard to describe. Day 8 we continue more of the same in Zion National Park where it's slot canyon walls and tower cliffs make it favorite for so many.
Day 9 we visit Grand Canyon National Park. Truly one of the world's most unique landscapes, the view from the rim is unlike anything else in the country. At the Grand Canyon IMAX, the film Grand Canyon: Rivers of Time shows you what it looks within the canyon on a screen six stories tall. We continue our adventure on day 10 by entering the Painted Desert of Arizona and into the Petrified Forest National Park.
Day 11 brings us to historic Santa Fe, NM, at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Established in the year 1607, you can easily walk downtown through the Santa Fe Plaza and visit the Palace of Governors. Continue to San Miguel Chapel, the oldest church building in North America, built in 1610. Day 12 we start back eastward in earnest and see the unique sites of Cadillac Ranch and Slug Bug Ranch in Texas.
Day 13 we are in Oklahoma City and visit ground zero of the 1995 bombing, now the site of the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Just east of the Gate of Time and Reflecting Pool lies the Field of Empty Chairs - a moving memorial to those that lost their lives in the tragedy. Later, we visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, home to more than 28,000 artifacts and art works reflecting on this unique American heritage. Day 14 sees us coming home. Watch the changes in our country's landscape as you take time to visit with new friends and reflect on the magnificence of our beautiful land.
